Romantic Relationships & Marriage

Thank you Dr. Becky Whetstone for being on the People On Dating Podcast

Becky's Journey From Journalism to Columns

Becky shared her passion for advice columns, tracing it back to her childhood fascination with Dr. Joyce Brothers and Ann Landers. Despite being discouraged from pursuing this career path, she pursued journalism and eventually became a feature writer at the San Antonio Express News. After two years, she convinced the editors to let her write a column about relationships, which became a hit. The column's popularity led to singles parties sponsored by the newspaper, attracting hundreds of attendees. After her journalism career ended, Becky continued to discuss relationships by attending graduate school.

Changing Marriage Dynamics and Expectations

William and Dr. Becky discussed the changing dynamics of marriage and relationships. They agreed that the generation that grew up with more common divorce rates now has different expectations and attitudes towards marriage. Dr. Becky emphasized the importance of learning healthy relationship skills and being aware of one's own wounds. They also discussed the cultural shift towards people getting married at a later age, which Dr. Becky supports. William raised concerns about the increasing divorce rate and the potential reasons behind it, such as not getting to know the other person well or societal pressure. Dr. Becky suggested that people are now waiting longer to get married, allowing them to develop more as individuals and have life experiences before committing to a relationship.

Self-Awareness and Personal Growth in Relationships

Becky and William discussed the importance of self-awareness and personal growth in relationships. Becky emphasized that understanding oneself is crucial for having a healthy marriage, and suggested that people should focus on their own healing before entering into a relationship. She also shared her personal experience of learning to prioritize her own needs and desires. William agreed with Becky's points and expressed concern about the portrayal of marriage on social media, which he believes may discourage men from committing to relationships. Becky, however, did not observe this trend in her individual therapy sessions with men.

Female Energy in Relationships Discussed

Becky and William discussed the importance of female energy in relationships, with Becky asserting that women have a unique ability to make men feel a certain way that nothing else can. They agreed that men are drawn to this energy and that it's a key factor in their attraction. Becky also emphasized the importance of a giving spirit in a healthy marriage, suggesting that some men may have had negative experiences due to marrying someone who was more focused on material gain than the actual person.

Building Relationships on Mutual Respect

Becky and William discussed the importance of getting to know someone before showing them what you can do for them. Becky emphasized that a good relationship is built on mutual respect and companionship, rather than one person constantly providing for the other. They also discussed the importance of emotional intelligence and self-awareness in relationships, as well as the need for sincere curiosity to truly get to know someone. William agreed with these points and expressed his intention to apply these insights in his personal life and podcast.

Dr. Becky's Marriage Crisis Management

William and Dr. Becky discussed her practice, which primarily focuses on marriage crisis management. Dr. Becky's clients come from her popular blog on Medium and word of mouth. She has a special niche in helping couples navigate through marriage crises and making wise decisions for their families. Dr. Becky also mentioned her upcoming book, "I Want Out: What to Do When One of You Wants to End Your Marriage," which will be released on February 4th. The book aims to guide couples through the crisis and help them manage the situation without causing a disaster. William expressed interest in having Dr. Becky back on the show to discuss her book and other topics, such as single mothers and dating. Dr. Becky agreed to this and also shared her website and blog for further contact.
